Thing 22 - Wikis

Before Thing 22 came around, the only wiki I really knew and used was wikipedia. I use wikipedia to find quick answers. A lot. Especially when watching quiz shows on TV. I just bear in mind that it might be worth double-checking the information if it's actually something important. I've never tried to contribute to wikipedia though and am just a passive user. I also hadn't explored it very thoroughly before, as until now I had no idea that wikipedia had a reference desk which is "serving as virtual librarians" and hadn't realised that you can see the page revision history - useful!

It was interesting to learn about the meaning and history of wikis and explore various library wikis, all of which were new to me. My favourite was actually the LibraryRoutesProject because it's fascinating to read about how people got where they are now.

I can see more potential for using wikis with library colleagues than having a public wiki for library users. If jointly compiling a list of sources or collaborating on a document such as a staff manual with a few colleagues, I would probably use Google docs. I'm open to try using a wiki though and can see that a wiki would be better and more flexible than Google docs when there is a larger group of people involved.

That's the second-last post done - I'm looking forward to the closing ceremony already!
